Purpose of the Healthy Active Living (HAL) Team at AY
To promote healthy active living at AY in order to encourage & support the mental, physical, emotional, intellectual, and social health of all students at AY through the use of education and hands-on opportunities.
Mental Health Programs – in addition to educational workshops, we try to offer activities that can help build into students’ “toolboxes” such as: Mindfulness, Yoga, Fitness Classes, and other practical, “hands on” activities
Physical Activity Programs – aim is to include and encourage students who do not typically take part in athletics or phys-ed classes, and to introduce students to fitness activities that can be found in the community (lifelong learning) and fun non-traditional high school activities. All AY students and staff are welcomed and encouraged to take part in HAL activities.
HAL Certificate – encourages students to stay physically active and promotes mental wellness through education & participation in a variety of activities and courses found at AY. This certificate can be earned by the time students graduate and can be used on resumes, bursary/scholarships and post-secondary applications.

Would you like to join the HAL Team and become a Fitness Ambassador?
- The HAL Team meets every 1-2 weeks in person, and communicates through email on a fairly regular basis.
- Fitness Ambassadors help promote and run HAL activities at AY. Examples of possible tasks are: creating JTV ads, passing along social media content, painting banners for the Pit, creating posters for the hallways, volunteering at HAL activities, and taking part in various HAL activities.
- Fitness Ambassadors can also help at other events held at AY such as Grade 8 Parent Night.
- Fitness Ambassadors can choose which activities suit their interests and schedule (just because you join the team, does not mean that you have to take part in everything!).
- Come on out and have some fun with the HAL Team this year! You can also earn volunteer hours for lunchtime meetings and work towards your HAL Certificate upon graduation!
